The Role of Sun-Gears in Planetary Gearboxes
Sun gears are an essential part of the planetary gear train and play a key role in achieving high reduction ratios. They are also the most robust, power dense and able to handle higher shock loads and overhung loads.
Typical applications of the planet gears are rugged and high speed industrial gearboxes, where the internal sun gear meshes with several outer planetary gears at once to distribute the load. This makes the planetary gear system more durable, with increased mass distribution and improved rotational stiffness.
A planetary gearbox consists of an internal sun gear, two or more external ring gears and a carrier that connects the radial axes of the ring gear to the central sun gear. These parts are positioned so that the center of each sun gear revolves around the center of the ring gear.
The ring gear is usually fixed in the outer position, but the carrier can be used as an output shaft or a spindle. In this case the planetary gearbox has a transmission ratio of i=4 or i=1.25 depending on the number of teeth in the sun gear and ring gear, as shown in the following table.
It is important to note that the gear mesh phase angles are only meaningful for planetary phasing analysis when the planets are spaced equally. This is not always the case in real-world designs and can be a problem with diametrically opposed planetary designs that have unequal helix angles.
This is a critical factor to consider during the design-phase of your planetary geartrain. If the planetary gear mesh phase angle is incorrect, it will lead to increased vibration frequencies and undesired noise characteristics.
Hence, a proper design-phase will take into account the gear mesh phase angle and apply appropriate corrections to achieve optimal performance and reduce these deviations. These corrections will not only improve the overall performance of your planetary geartrain but can also save you money in the long run.
Errors during the manufacturing process and assembly can cause gear mesh phasing errors that will deviate from perfect phasing. These errors are often manifested as low frequency modulations and are a common source of noise.
In addition to a correct gear mesh phase angle, the ring and sun gears must be arranged in a symmetrical fashion. This is a major consideration in the design of your planetary geartrain, as if any planets are not placed properly or are misaligned with respect to the sun axis, massive imbalance forces will occur when the sun gear rotates at high speeds!
The asymmetrical placement of the planet gears will affect the lateral force and load distribution, especially at high rotational speeds. This is why the planetary geartrain should be designed with the planets as closely spaced as possible and symmetrical.
If your application is based on the sun gear spinning around an external ring, then it is a good idea to look into using a wheel drive planetary gearbox instead. This type of planetary gearbox can be paired with an electric motor, hydraulic motor or petrol or diesel combustion engine to deliver the torque necessary for your application.
